The
Buddha asks:
"If there is a house with windows facing the east, when the sun rises and
sunlight enters by way of the window, where does it land?"
... The student
answers:
"The sunlight will land on the west wall,
Lord."
The Buddha asks:
"And if there is no west wall, where does the
sunlight land?"
The student answers:
"The sunlight will land on the ground,
Lord."
The Buddha asks:
"And if there is no ground, where does the
sunlight land?"
The student answers:
"The sunlight will land on water, Lord."
The Buddha asks:
"And if there is no water, where does the
sunlight land?"
The student answers:
"The sunlight does not land, Lord."
Finally, the Buddha sums up the analogy
(paraphrased):
“In the same way, where there is no craving for the
senses, then consciousness does not land there or grow.
Where consciousness does not land or grow,
name-&-form (mind and matter) does not alight. Where name-&-form does
not alight, there is no formation.
Where there is no formation, there is no production
of renewed becoming. Where there is no production of renewed becoming, there is
no future birth, aging, disease and death.
Then, this has no sorrow, affliction or despair.”
